What is Next for the Life Is Strange Universe?

With its post-credits scene and its final line stating, “Max Caulfield will return.” Life Is Strange Double Exposure ends with everything left wide open for future possibilities for the franchise.
Life Is Strange: Double Exposure
The episodic adventure series releases its latest instalment with Life is Strange Double Exposure. Developed by Deck Nine, the same team behind the prequel “Before the Storm” and the third main instalment “Life is Strange True Colors,” and published by Square Enix. The latest and fourth instalment is a direct sequel to the 2015 “Life Is Strange” game and a return of its protagonist, Max Caulfield.
Here’s a recap of the game’s premise before we dive into spoilers and discussions. Set a decade after the first game, Life Is Strange Double Exposure focuses on an older Max Caulfield who has relocated to Lakeport, Vermont, where she works as a photographer-in-residence at Caledon University. Still traumatised from what unravelled in Arcadia Bay, Max decided never to use her time-rewinding powers again for fear of drastic consequences. However, as fate would have it, Max finds herself in another strange situation when she discovers her friend Safi dead from a gunshot wound.
Struck with grief, Max discovers a new power that allows her to “pulse” into an alternative timeline where Safi is still alive. This power soon evolves to enable her to travel between these parallel timelines at will. Now, with her newfound ability and determination, Max will stop at nothing until she catches the murderer and prevents the alternative Safi from meeting the same fate as her own, setting the game’s plot in motion.
Warning: Major spoilers ahead as the article explores the story, its twists, and its ending to provide clarity to the questions discussed in this piece.
Is Max’s New Power A Natural Evolution for Powered Individuals?
As we know, Max Caulfield utilises her newfound ability by investigating several of her friends and residents of Caledon University in both parallel timelines. As she gathers evidence and gains information from her interactions, Max finds herself in a difficult situation when she is nearly exposed to Detective Vince Alderman, leading to her discovery of another power: “entangling” objects between timelines. This is quite shocking as players and Max herself are just trying to get their heads around her new ability to travel between timelines, let alone another ability to boost.

Is this a natural process for individuals with powers? Why now? What triggered it? There haven’t been any signs of evolved powers from the previous Life Is Strange games, so Max’s newfound ability opens up a whole new direction for the franchise. It will be interesting to see if Max’s powers will continue to evolve into new abilities and what this means overall for other powered individuals we have played in previous games or met throughout the franchise. With the end credits promising more of Max Caulfield in the future, I’m sure we will soon discover what other powers Max has yet to awaken.
The Power Within And What They Have In Common
Max’s investigation led her to discover a connection between Safi’s cancelled book deal and the suicide of a Caledon student, Maya Okada, who was Safi’s best friend and a student to Professor Lucas Colmenero, the head of the Literature Department. Max exposes several individuals involved in the coverup of the suicide and the reason why Safi’s book deal was cancelled, leading to a shocking revelation. Her friend Safi has powers of her own. With her shapeshifting ability, Safi has been impersonating several faculty members and students to sabotage the lives and careers of anyone who had involvement in Maya’s death.
Now, with all the pieces coming together surrounding the dark truth of Caledon University and the shocking reveal of Safi’s powers. This is the first time in the game series that two powered individuals have met and realised that they aren’t the only ones. Interestingly, as they share each other’s stories of discovering their powers, Safi’s powers started manifesting in high school just after her parents divorced. Safi struggled to become the ideal person her mother was trying to shape her to be, leading her to discover her gift. Adding what we already know from the backstories of other powered individuals, each one seems to have had a rough upbringing or gone through a tragic event.
We know that Max’s powers were triggered when trying to save her friend Chloe from being shot in the school bathroom, and Daniel’s powers in Life Is Strange 2 were triggered by the sudden death of his father. In contrast, Alex’s powers awakened in Life Is Strange True Colors after being put in the foster care system at 11. Is a trauma response a way to awaken one’s power from within? It seems like there is a correlation between both. For now, it is just a theory, but in time, if we discover more individuals with similar experiences surrounding their powers, we can put the idea of it being all a coincidence to rest.

An Interesting New Power Means Exciting New Opportunities
If the shocking revelation of Safi’s power wasn’t enough of an excitement, the type of power she has makes it all that more intriguing. Now, I will admit that first, I wasn’t on board with the whole shapeshifting ability as I have always seen the powers within the franchise being mainly focused around the concept of mental powers, yes I know; before you mention it, I understand that Daniel’s powers of telekinesis are a physical aspect, but it is still associated with mental focus. Hence, it can also be categorised as a mental power. On top of that, we never get to control Daniel’s character, but rather, his older brother, Sean. This leads to my second point.
I always believed that incorporating mental powers into the series would offer an engaging gameplay aspect to the character and the narrative. However, taking it a step too far in the direction of any abilities like flying or throwing fire, etc, a more physical aspect to the powers wouldn’t create a gameplay experience that feels grounded, especially since the franchise’s essence hinges on immersive, life-based teen/young adult drama.

Surprisingly, the explanation around Safi’s powers is more her having control over people’s perception and what they see, meaning Safi’s power is more an illusion of shapeshifting than an actual physical manifestation, hence a mental power once again. I quite liked this approach to creating a new power with a twist. For a power that could have alienated the game, the developers did an excellent job of providing a way to keep it grounded within the series’s lore. It got me thinking of new potential powers they can put a spin on that would in no way be possible outside the limit of what the series has established so far. This opens a whole new area of powers for future game instalments.
A Vague Choice Leads To More Unanswered Questions
As we enter the latter half of the game, Safi uncovers the truth at the Krampus-themed party: her mother and the president of Caledon University were responsible for the cancellation of her book. This revelation causes Safi’s powers to spiral out of control, unleashing a storm connected to Max’s past. Fortunately, Max arrives just in time to rescue Safi from herself. Together, they confront the storm, ultimately merging the two timelines and putting an end to the chaos. In the end, Safi leaves Caledon in search of others like them. She asks Max to wait for her return, allowing players the choice to decide her response.
Now, despite enjoying the game overall, I have certain issues with it here. The choice at the end felt very vague and inauthentic to Max’s character. On the one hand, refusing Safi’s request feels like abandoning Safi when everything you have been doing since the start of the game is to protect her, so the choice to refuse would feel out of character for Max.

However, on the contrary, Safi’s little speech before asking Max to wait for her felt like a villain’s monologue, revealing her god complex and the belief that she is superior to everyone else. By accepting her proposal, Max seems to align with Safi’s views and mindset, which again feels inauthentic for her character to agree with. Everyone will have their own take on it, but that is what it came across for me. Still, regardless of our opinions on the choices being made, the perspective of the situation ultimately hinges on Safi’s future actions, which leads me to my next point.
Safi’s Potential For Growth and Reflection Or The Origin of An Arch-Nemesis For Max?
One of the many lingering questions—if not the main question—arising from Life Is Strange: Double Exposure is: What will Safi do next? What will she discover on her journey to find others with powers? As mentioned earlier, will Safi reflect on her past mistakes and understand that with great power comes great responsibility—sorry, Uncle Ben didn’t mean to steal your proverb—and strive to become a better person who helps others in need? Or will she continue to spiral into her god complex, seeking to exploit others for her own gain?

Is this the beginning of a future conflict between Max and Safi—a power struggle between right and wrong, shaped by their differing views on their abilities and the meaning of using one’s power? Will Safi gather power users to her side and way of thinking, or will Safi emerge as a great ally and support for Max as they embark on a shared journey to understand their powers while also finding other power users needing help? For now, it appears that Max and Safi are on different paths. However, in time, their paths will cross once again, and only then will we discover what fate has in store for both of them.
Another Potential Power User?
Speaking of finding fellow powered individuals, by the end credits, we already see her seeking out another potential individual in Diamond, a fellow Caledon resident and film student. Who in the post scene is exhibiting nosebleeds, usually the sign of a power awakening. Max suffered from nosebleeds throughout the game, with the awakening of her newfound ability. Interestingly enough, Max also had a weird encounter with Diamond near the end of the game during all the storm chaos. While Max is helping other residents trapped within Safi’s out-of-control power, the same isn’t said for Diamond, who ventures into the Admin building alone; what happens to her next goes unknown until everything is fixed and she reappears again in the merged timelines with everyone else.

Did something happen to Diamond? Was she not affected by Safi’s powers? Does her power have anything to do with it? And what is her power? There are so many lingering questions, and those are just ones surrounding Diamond. It will be interesting to see what comes next in the Life Is Strange series; I wonder if it will focus back straight away on Max or another new individual with their own setting and plot. Who knows, it may even be about Safi and Diamond working together in search of answers and seeking out others like themselves.
I would prefer focusing on these established characters, a game about Safi and Diamond travelling together in search of answers and finding others like themselves, especially if the game developers plan on having both characters continue having a significant role in the series moving forward. It could even lead to a Diamond-focused game once her character develops and grows more in another Life Is Strange instalment, as she played a minor role in Life Is Strange Double Exposure.
A Brave New World
With the limitless potential of Safi, Diamond, and wherever their journey takes them in future instalments, we must not forget our main girl, Max Caulfield, who was left behind in Caledon. In the storm’s aftermath, Max now faces the challenge of explaining her power to others and revealing what truly transpired. I myself was gutted that we didn’t get a choice to leave with Safi and seek answers too. However, I trust the game developers have a plan for Max and where her future will take her. But one thing we know for sure is that with Max and Safi’s powers now in the opening, what does this potentially mean for their relationships with their loved ones and friends, their safety, or even the world?

Will Max be able to convince her friends and the residents of Caledon to keep their secrets hidden, or is it already too late? Is it inevitable that word will get out, forcing Max and other individuals with powers to flee from society in fear of their abilities? Is Safi justified in seeking others to protect themselves from potential future harm, or can Max find a way for everyone to coexist if the truth about their existence is revealed? I’m curious where the game developers’ direction will take our beloved characters and any new ones introduced in future instalments. Regardless of whatever will unfold, Max faces an uncertain future that she must confront courageously, no matter the outcome.
Other Lingering Questions
Two other questions have been on my mind recently; the first is with Detective Vince Alderman. As players know, the detective met his demise when he came in contact with his alternative timeline self, causing both to be erased from existence in both timelines; we even had our friend Moses doing research into this background with nothing turning up. This was quite a shocking and horrible fate for someone who was only trying to do his job investigating Safi’s death. There were no follow-up answers surrounding his demise or what repercussions his erasure would have. Will this storyline and character reappear or be mentioned in the following instalments? If not what a terrfying fate or who knows, maybe Detective Alderman is still out there somewhere.
My second question is about the storm itself. We know from the first game that it occurred due to Max’s abuse of her powers, trying to mess with time and saving Chloe, leading to her difficult choice in the end: to save Chloe or Acadia Bay. This time, the storm reappears again, and this time, it’s hellbent on destroying Caledon University. At first, we assume it’s Max’s doing once again. However, as the story unfolds, we discover the storm is actually correlated to Safi’s losing control over her powers.
This opens up new questions about the storm. Is the storm conjured when a powered individual loses control of their powers? If so, why didn’t we witness any storm brewing in Life is Strange 2 and Life Is Strange True Colors? Is the storm only connected to specific individuals? Or is there more to the storm? I hope we receive clear answers in time surrounding the storm, why it is conjured, and what its significance is to the franchise.
Conclusion
Life Is Strange: Double Exposure provided a welcoming and intriguing new chapter for our protagonist, Max Caulfield. A turning point that will drastically change the trajectory of her life. While the latest instalment left us with more unanswered questions than answers, it created new and exciting possibilities for the direction that both the characters in the Life Is Strange series and the series itself can take.
Now that I have finished Life Is Strange Double Exposure, I am eager to see what the game developers Deck Nine have in store for us next, whether it will feature Max Caulfield once again or introduce a new character to join the superpower gang; I’m entirely onboard for what is to come.
