3 must-watch alternatives to watch this Halloween season to replace the lack of a new Netflix horror series from Mike Flanagan

It should be that time of year when horror fans eagerly anticipate the latest Netflix chilling series from Mike Flanagan. Each fall season, we would look forward to immersing ourselves into his signature blend of rich narrative, emotionally charged and stellar performances with spine-chilling scares, reveals, and suspense; however, this year, a sense of unease lingers as we find ourselves asking: where is our new Netflix horror show to binge-watch?

Since 2018, Netflix has provided us with an impressive amount of captivating and chilling horror series created by the visionary Mike Flanagan. It started with the critically acclaimed “The Haunting of Hill House”, a loosely based but masterful adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same name. The audiences were hooked on the 10-episode series with its stellar performances, meticulous direction, and its unsettling atmosphere that lingered throughout each episode. The series brilliantly explored the themes of grief, trauma, and, in particular, family trauma with profound emotional depth while still keeping viewers on the edge of their seats with its genuine scares and tension.

Following the success of his The Haunting series, Flanagan turned to something different and released the unsettling “Midnight Mass” which explored the complex themes of faith, community, and the human condition while providing a thought-provoking yet terrifying narrative with a clever and welcoming take on the vampire genre. And just last year, he captivated audiences once again with “The Fall of the House of Usher,” a character-driven narrative that intricately blends mystery and horror. This series was a brilliant homage to the works of Edgar Allan Poe, weaving in elements from his stories to create an engaging tale filled with stellar performances, a lingering eerie atmosphere, and enough scares and suspense to keep us on edge.

Any time Netflix released a new horror series by Mike Flanagan, viewers knew they were in for one hell of a ride. With his distinct storytelling style and knack for crafting psychological thrills, Flanagan quickly became a household name in the horror genre. However, all good things must eventually come to an end, and that reality struck when Flanagan and his long-time producer, Trevor Macy, announced a significant multiyear series deal with Amazon Studios. This pivotal move signified that 2023’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” would mark the conclusion of their collaboration with Netflix.

Luckily, I’ve discovered a selection of exciting and spine-tingling horror alternatives that are sure to satisfy horror fans craving for some new spooky adventures. These must-watch alternatives are series that I have personally started watching myself, and I think they will keep you on the edge of your seat and fill that void left by Netflix’s absence of fresh, spooky content this season.

The detective and her colleagues are forced to confront the gruesome reality of the crime and the darker aspects of human nature as they delve deeper into a case that is as intriguing as it is terrifying.

Next on the list is the horror drama Teacup by creator Ian McCulloch. This intriguing series draws inspiration from the acclaimed novel Stinger by author Robert R. McCammon. The story unfolds at the Chenoweth’s secluded Georgia farm, where Maggie and James Chenoweth are raising their two children, Meryl and Arlo, with the help of James’ mother, Ellen. From the very first scene, a sense of foreboding pervades the atmosphere. A tied-up, sickly and bloody woman tries to escape from her captor in the woods. At the same time, the usually calm farm animals exhibit unusual behaviour as they become increasingly agitated and restless, sensing something ominous lurking in their surroundings.

It isn’t long until the young son, Arlo, mysteriously disappears into the dense woods nearby, only to return visibly changed and disturbed. And as if the situation couldn’t become more dire, a menacing gas mask inexplicably arrives at the farm, terrorizing the Chenoweths and their neighbours with a warning not to cross the blue line or face dire consequences. Confused and scared, the group of people band together in the face of this unknown and deadly threat.

The talented ensemble includes actress Yvonne Strahovski and actor Scott Speedman, who skilfully embody their head-of-the-household characters, adding layers of complexity and emotional resonance to the story. In addition to their captivating performances, the cast features notable actors such as Chaske Spencer and Kathy Baker, whose experience brings gravitas, Boris McGiver, known for his nuanced portrayals, and Emilie Bierre, who adds a fresh energy to the ensemble.

Beautifully shot, strange, eerie, and suspenseful, Teacup does a fantastic job cultivating stress and anxiety with its dark ambience and the impression of a lurking supernatural malevolence. Led by emotionally driven performances, Teacup is a genre-bending of drama, horror, and science-fiction that unravels its captivating mystery into a completely adrenalised thriller.
