Dearest gentle reader,
The latest season of Netflix’s beloved series Bridgerton has come and gone, leaving us with delightful reveals and shocking twists. From lavish festive balls to betrayals and not one but two heart-warming weddings, the season concluded on a high with the public unmasking of Lady Whistledown herself and hints of what is to come for the anticipated season 4.

Part 1 Lingering Questions

In the first half of the third season, we witness Penelope’s journey of self-discovery as she breaks free from her cocoon and empowers herself to initiate change, challenging the societal perception of her as an outcast and inevitable spinster. As the story unfolds over the initial four episodes, we witness Colin’s inner turmoil as he grapples with the intensifying emotions he harbours for Penelope. Ultimately, concluding with a steamy carriage encounter and a shocking proposal.

Over the next month, as we eagerly anticipated the release of the second part of the season, we couldn’t help but wonder how Penelope would manage to maintain her facade of happiness with Colin while silently carrying the weight of her double life as Lady Whistledown? How will Colin reaction to the inevitable reveal? Or whether Eloise would take matters into her own hands?

Colin & The Wallflower

Thankfully, the latter part of the season managed to address these looming questions and not only provide a satisfying conclusion to season 3 but also met our expectations for Penelope and Colin’s relationship.

Undoubtedly, the most significant turning point for Penelope this season was her daring public reveal to the ton, where she unmasked herself as Lady Whistledown. In this high-stakes moment, she not only revealed her true identity but also acknowledged that Lady Whistledown is an integral part of her. It is within this moment, we see our girl Penelope finally transform into the butterfly we had always known she was. Embracing her true self and acknowledges the impact of her past actions on her neighbours and citizens of Mayfair. She pledges, with the Queen’s permission, to make meaningful changes in her approach to writing as she moves forward.

Despite the tumultuous journey Colin and Penelope faced when he uncovered her secret, it was deeply satisfying to witness Colin not only forgiving her for her past transgressions and secrets but also wholeheartedly embracing Penelope for the formidable woman she truly is. We have always known Penelope yearned for an independent life in a society where women were seldom allowed to pursue their own aspirations, instead living vicariously through their husbands. It was quite touching to witness them both heal the wounds of their marriage and Colin pledging his unwavering support to Penelope as she sought to define her purpose and carve out her rightful place in society.

And to top it all off, as a beautiful nod to Penelope’s transformation this season, we see her step into the role of the latest Lady Whistledown gossip column under her new pen name, Penelope Bridgerton. While actress Nicola Coughlan’s voice seamlessly blends into the familiar voice of Julie Andrews, who has portrayed the sensationalist gossip columnist over the past three seasons.

Benedict’s Newfound Freedom

Perhaps the most shocking aspects of this season would be in relation to Benedict and Francesca. For the past few seasons, Benedict has jumped from woman to woman, avoiding any sense of marital engagements and enjoying occasional parties and gatherings. Still, this season, Benedict finds himself as the companion of Lady Tilley Arnold, a mysterious and intriguing woman.

As their relationship progressed, Tilley introduces Benedict to her ‘good’ friend Paul Suarez. The two men immediately hit it off, and it wasn’t long before Benedict is left with an invitation for three to the bedroom. The show gave subtle hints towards Benedict’s curiosity about his sexuality back in season 1. However, it was still a surprise when Benedict decided to take them up on their offer.

None of the Bridgerton siblings explore the themes of sexuality in their books, so the show seems to be craving its own path moving forward. Benedict now has had a taste of freedom, and with him turning down Lady Tilley’s proposal for a serious, monogamous relationship, it will be interesting to see how Benedict plans to explore his newfound sexuality in further seasons.

Francesca’s Future

Speaking of exploring themes of sexuality, it looks like Benedict won’t be the only queer Bridgerton sibling. Francesca, played by the newly cast Hanna Dodd, is the shy third daughter of the Bridgerton household who yearns for a life of tranquillity. Many viewers might have noticed a lack of passion and spark in Francesca’s relationship and subsequent marriage to Lord Kilmartin, especially compared to her siblings’ fiery romances but it shows that not all relationships and marriages have to be this over the top dramatic, passionate love affair.

However, the most unexpected twist occurred at the end of the season when Lord Kilmartin introduces his cousin Michaela Stirling, who’s mere presence left Francesca stumbling for her words. Spoilers for those unfamiliar with the books, this twist is particularly shocking as Francesca’s book “When He Was Wicked” depicts her falling in love with Michael Stirling after Lord Kilmartin’s passing. It appears that the show plans to explore the modern notions of relationships and it raises the question of whether the gender switch of Michael to Michaela will bring about substantial changes or if the adaptation will strive to remain faithful to the source material, addressing important themes such as infertility that hold great significance in Francesca’s narrative.

It will be interesting to see the depth and emotion that actress Masali Baduza will infuse into her portrayal of the character Michaela Stirling.

Eloise’s New Beginnings

In the latter half of the season, we witness Eloise’s rekindled affection for her best friend, Penelope, following Cressida’s betrayal and Penelope’s public unmasking as Lady Whistledown. Their revived friendship provided much-needed emotional depth and gave us some heartfelt scenes that genuinely elevated the conclusion of this season.

Eloise’s storyline didn’t stop there. Inspired by her sister Francesca’s relocation with her newlywed husband John to Scotland, Eloise decides to join them and embarks on her own journey to expand her horizons and to take a well-deserved break from the bustling Mayfair and the pressures of the marital pursuit. Eloise’s exciting transition sets the stage for what’s to come, and we anticipate witnessing a transformed Eloise in the next season, equipped with fresh perspectives and ambitious goals as she strives to make a difference in society.

Cressida’s Downfall

Throughout the start of the season, Cressida surprises everyone by befriending Eloise and revealing a more compassionate side of herself. However, as the season progressed, Cressida Cowper returned to her old ways and became a formidable foe. She attempted to seize Penelope’s position as Lady Whistledown to escape her arranged marriage. Furthermore, she stoops to the level of blackmail after uncovering Penelope’s secret identity, using it as leverage to extort money in exchange for her silence.

By the end of the series, it becomes evident that Cressida is the only character who doesn’t achieve her goals. Her schemes fail, leading her to face social exile, and she eventually ends up living with her wicked Aunt Joanna in the countryside. Despite the uncertainty of her future in the series, it’s unlikely that this is the last we’ll see of Cressida Cowper. She may reappear as a transformed woman, much like Eloise, with new aspirations. On the other hand, she could return harbouring bitterness towards those who have wronged her.

Conclusion

Season 4 is set to shake things up for the Bridgerton series. We can expect a broader focus on exploring and representing LGBTQ+ themes and characters alongside the traditional themes, creating a more diverse and inclusive narrative. We can also expect more side stories focusing on the supporting cast and the ton of Mayfair.

With no clear indication of which Bridgerton sibling will take centre stage, the anticipation for the next season is high, especially given the two-year wait. This provides plenty of time for fans to speculate and build excitement for the next martial matchmaking.
