Pros

In the novella, Adena’s character shines even more than before. She was already a fan favourite for her kind, loving, and bubbly personality in “Powerless”. We all loved the sweet and genuine sisterly relationship with Paedyn. However, when Adena meets the mysterious Makoto, we see a whole new side of her. Being around Makoto brings out Adena’s cheeky and playful side, which is lovely to witness. Reading through Adena’s eyes and thoughts is a welcome addition, especially considering what we know is to come.

The new character, Makoto, is a handsome but cynical man whose tragic past has shaped his worldview. However, being around Adena brings out a soft, bubbly, and warm side to Makoto that surprises even him. The chemistry and interactions between the two leads are heartfelt, wholesome, and sweet, and knowing what we know makes their relationship heart-breaking and tragic. The addition of Makoto to the Powerless world’s already complex roster of characters is genuinely intriguing. With his powerful hidden ability and pessimistic outlook, Makoto brings a refreshing new dynamic to the series.

Cons

I understand that the novella is a short story, but I feel its plot lacks a distinct identity. It is less plot-driven and more focused on the blooming love between Adena and Makoto. As an avid reader, I understand that preferences vary; some readers may prefer a greater focus on the romance driving the plot, while others may prefer a more in-depth narration. Personally, I appreciate a balance of both, which I felt the first novel achieved. Although it may seem nit-picky, I believe that the novella could have benefited from a unique plot driving its story, in addition to the romance, to make it more memorable.

Conclusion

The novella offers a deeper understanding of Adena’s character, motivated by her decisions and her relationship with the brooding Makoto. Their bittersweet but tragic romance makes us yearn for more and contemplate what could have been. The foreknowledge of the ending makes the conclusion even more gut-wrenching.

The biggest takeaway from the novella is Makoto himself. It will be interesting to see where the author Lauren Roberts creates next for Mak, where his story will lead, and whether his presence will impact the following books in the series. Will he encounter Paedyn and reveal his secret to her? or is he destined to cross paths with the enforcer Kai?

These lingering questions await us when the next book in the series “Reckless” is released in July 2024. I have already pre-ordered my copy and am eagerly counting down the days until we can again join Paedyn and Kai on their journey. For those who haven’t started the romance fantasy series yet, I highly recommend getting the first book to immerse yourself in the world of IIya before Reckless is released.
