Dark Places by Gillian Flynn: Book Recommendation

“Dark Places” is Gillian Flynn’s second novel, which she wrote after her critically acclaimed debut book “Sharp Objects”. The novel was published in 2009, and it delves into various topics such as class struggles, poverty, and the Satanic cult hysteria that swept the United States during the 1980s, which instilled fear in the lives of everyday Americans. The novel mentioned had the honour of being included in The New York Times Best Seller list for hardcover fiction, where it remained for two consecutive weeks. Additionally, it was adapted into a movie that was released in 2015, featuring the renowned Hollywood actress Charlize Theron.

Synopsis

In 1985, the Day family resided on a desolate farm on the outskirts of a small Kansas town. The family was struggling with poverty, and their efforts to keep their household together were challenging. Seven-year-old Libby Day was the youngest daughter in the family, living with her mother, two older sisters, and older brother, while her father was an estranged alcoholic.

Patty, Libby’s mother, worked tirelessly to provide for her four children while her son Ben was struggling with dark and ominous thoughts. Then, tragedy strikes one morning when Libby’s entire family are brutally murdered by her brother Ben. Libby, the solo survivor, barely escaped with her life. With her testimony, Ben is tried for manslaughter and given a life sentence.

As the 25th anniversary of her survival approaches, Libby, now in her thirties, struggles to make ends meet as her fame and financial support fade. However, as fate would have it, one day, she happened to cross paths with Lyle Wirth, a member of a group known as the ‘Kill Club’. This group specialized in delving into the mysteries surrounding solved and unsolved cases that had long been forgotten and neglected.

They believe that Ben Day, who was accused of killing his mother and sisters that night, might be innocent. Libby is initially reluctant to have any involvement with the Kill Club and their beliefs. However, her stance changes when Lyle offers to assist her with her financial problems. As she delves deeper into the events of that fateful night, she starts to unravel the truth behind the horrifying murders that have haunted her ever since.

Pros

Let me begin by sharing my thoughts on the book. I found several things fascinating, which made the reading experience all the more enjoyable. The beauty of Flynn’s writing and the way she narrates the story from three perspectives kept me engaged. Through the eyes of adult Libby, the present-day perspective of the murders is revealed, while the troubled teenage brother Ben Day and his mother Patty Day give us a glimpse into the past. This unique technique adds more weight to the story and plays on the mystery of what really happened on that fateful night.

I also appreciate the way Flynn uses descriptive writing to create a sense of horror in her stories. She establishes a foundation with rich imagery and then builds upon it. In “Dark Places”, Flynn writes about an ordinary domestic setting that turns into something twisted and almost unrecognizable. But when you think the horror is too much, she brings you back to reality with vivid descriptions of daily life that make the horror even more unsettling.

Another aspect that sets this story apart is that none of the characters, even the protagonist Libby Day, are likeable. But that’s precisely what makes the story so memorable. Libby is not a typical hero who has recovered unscathed from a brutal past. Instead, she is portrayed as a complex character with selfish, lonely, and disturbed traits. I find myself drawn to complex characters that challenge my perspective, and as an avid reader, there’s something truly captivating about experiencing the world through the eyes of a complex female character.

Cons

Regarding the potential issues or negative aspects of the narrative of Dark Places, some individuals might find the ending to be polarizing. The synopsis makes it evident that the story leads to a twist that uncovers the truth about the night of the murders, and this revelation has received mixed feedback from readers. In addition to the slow pacing and whether a reader is interested in unsympathetic characters, some readers can walk away feeling disappointed by the end.

Conclusion

As mentioned above, considering both the positive and negative aspects, I strongly recommend this gripping book to those who can handle violence, intricate and unappealing characters, and a constant feeling of unease. Suppose you’re like me and appreciate a story that demonstrates how women, when given power and under certain circumstances, can also be capable of causing harm and unspeakable brutality. In that case, this book is perfect for you.
