Half a Year of Movie Magic: 6 Film Highlights for Every Month
It’s hard to believe we have reached the halfway point of 2024 already. Since January, we have seen some amazing films, including the highly anticipated Dune: Part Two, a prequel about Furiosa’s origin, the fourth instalment of the action-packed Bad Boys franchise, and Pixar’s beloved sequel, Inside Out 2, which grossed over a billion dollars in just two weeks.
Over the past six months, there has been an impressive line-up of exciting films. Despite not having the opportunity to watch all the films released during this time that I’m interested in, there are six film highlights that I’ve managed to watch and would highly recommend to fellow film enthusiasts. Each of these films, one from each month between January and June, has left a lasting impression and is worth adding to your must-watch list.
I want to clarify this is not a declaration that these are the top films of the last six months. It’s a list of my personal favourites from each month based on the films I’ve had the chance to see. If you have discovered films with higher quality or better audience scores and reviews that you prefer, that’s absolutely fine. I’m sharing my film experiences and giving some insight and takes on some of the film highlights released over the past few months.

Self-Reliance
Kicking off the start of the year and the first film highlight is actor Jake Johnson’s feature-length directorial debut, “Self-Reliance.” Jake Johnson is best known for playing Nick Miller on the sitcom “New Girl,” but this time, he has taken to writing and directing his first film.
Self-Reliance is a gripping comedy thriller about a man called Tommy Walcott who is unexpectedly invited to participate in a high-stakes reality game show where he can win 1 million dollars if he can survive 30 days of being pursued by a team of hunters attempting to kill him.

The movie strikes a perfect balance between comedy and action, with John Johnson’s charm and humour shining through in the character of Tommy, a sympathetic and relatable protagonist. Playing opposite Johnson is the talented actress Anna Kendrick, who plays Maddy, a quirky waitress who becomes an unlikely ally in Tommy’s struggle to stay alive and his main love interest. Johnson and Kendrick have fantastic chemistry that further enhances the relatability of the characters.
What I enjoyed about the film was its ability to deliver side-splitting comedic moments and witty dialogue while delving into profound themes about humanity. This infusion of heart and depth elevates the characters and makes them more compelling and multidimensional in the survival comedy genre, which would have often been characterized by one-dimensional portrayals. It is available now and was released on Hulu on January 12th, 2024.
Upgraded
Next film highlight on the list is something on the lighter side of comedy with the romantic comedy “Upgraded.” I wrote a review of this film in another blog post, so I’ll only touch on it briefly here. If you want to read more, you can check out the full article.
Under the direction of actress Carlson Young, renowned for her portrayal of fan-favourite character Brooke Maddox in the initial two seasons of the MTV Scream series, I truly hoped that the show would have been renewed for a third season to wrap up the Brandan James storyline. Nevertheless, I digress.

“Upgraded” stars Camila Mendes as the lead protagonist, Ana Santos. Camila Mendes, known for her role in the teen drama series Riverdale, as well as her more recent portrayal of Queen B Drea in the black comedy film “Do Revenge,” Brings her charm to the role of Ana. Ana is an ambitious New York art world intern who is trying to make a name for herself and impress her demanding boss, Claire. Ana’s luck begins to change when she seizes the opportunity to travel to London to assist her boss with an art auction and receives an upgrade to first class, where she meets the charming and wealthy British man, William.
Ana soon finds herself weaving a web of lies to make her life seem more impressive to William, however, these lies lead her down an unexpected path full of glamorous events, romantic entanglements, and surprising career opportunities. It is available now on Amazon Prime and was released on February 9th 2024.
Dune: Part 2
The third film highlight and on a more grander scale is the highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve. Dune: Part Two is the second instalment of the two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune. The movie picks up where the first instalment left off, with Paul Atreides living among the Fremen people on the desert planet Arrakis. Paul and his pregnant mother, Lady Jessica, are suspected of being spies by some, while others see their arrival as fulfilling the prophecy of a messiah who will bring peace to Arrakis. Regardless, Paul must earn the trust of the Fremen to avenge his house and wage war against House Harkonnen.
Dune: Part Two achieved the seemingly impossible by surpassing its predecessor, delivering a science fiction/action blockbuster that stands out in its own right. This film is a testament to the evolution of cinematic achievements, boasting an exceptional ensemble cast, breath-taking visuals, and intense fight choreography. However, it’s the rhythmic compositions of Hans Zimmer that truly elevate the film, offering a unique auditory experience that complements the visual spectacle.

I have been a massive fan of Denis Villeneuve since watching his films like Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, etc. His work on the Dune films is a testament to his mastery of the craft and his delivery of an extraordinary cinematic experience. Villeneuve brings the source material to life with meticulous attention to detail, immersing audiences in a richly developed alien world.
Although I haven’t read the Dune books or been a fan, the films have introduced me to a captivating, pulse-pounding action drama adorned with stunning visuals and propelled by its powerhouse performances from the likes of Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Austin Butler, and many others. The performances deliver compelling, multifaceted characters possessing genuine depth and flaws, and with every other achievement, the film leaves us with an unforgettable and perfectly executed cinematic experience. Dune: Part Two was released on March the 1st, 2024 and is available to buy on Amazon Prime and is available to stream on Max since May 21st, 2024
Civil War
Sticking with the theme of war and the fourth film highlight is the dystopian thriller “Civil War” directed by Ex Machina director Alex Garland. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman, and Cailee Spaeny, the film follows a group of war journalists traveling from New York to Washington,D.C in the hopes of interviewing the President during a civil war fought across the United States between the federal government and several regional factions.
Civil War is a thought-provoking and emotionally impactful portrayal of the complexities of conflict. The film explores the war’s profound impact on society, focusing on the personal and interpersonal repercussions rather than merely depicting the political aspects and opposing viewpoints. It immerses the audience in the emotional upheaval experienced by the main characters and those in their immediate circle, vividly depicting the human toll of the war amidst the chaos, internal strife, and tragic loss. Through the lens of the character’s experiences and the fantastic performance from the cast, it offers a poignant and profound reflection on the human condition in times of conflict.

Dunst and her fellow actors deliver stellar performances that bring the struggles, trauma, and hopes of war to life. Their chemistry and nuanced portrayals humanize their characters, making their experiences relatable and compelling. Kristen Dunst’s standout performance as the hardened photojournalist Lee Smith powerfully highlights the emotional toll of conflict on the human condition. Additionally, the stunning yet eerie cinematography, enhanced by handheld camera footage, immerses you in the characters’ lives and evokes a genuine concern for their safety and well-being.
The combination of the impactful soundtrack and masterful battle choreography not only enriches the storytelling but also adds emotional depth to the moral dilemmas faced by the characters throughout the film. It creates a compelling cinematic experience that prompts viewers to reflect deeply on the themes of war and conflict, particularly in light of present-day struggles, making the well-crafted film more relatable and remarkable.
It received a world wide release on the 12th April, 2024 and is available to buy on Amazon Prime.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Next in the line-up and the fifth film highlight is the highly-anticipated fifth instalment of the Mad Max series. This film marks a significant departure from the series by focusing on a new lead character other than the iconic Max. Set as a prequel to the events of Mad Max: Fury Road, it serves as an origin story for Furiosa, the character famously portrayed by Charlize Theron. The post-apocalyptic action film is helmed by renowned director George Miller. It features the talented Anya Taylor-Joy in the role of Furiosa, with the charismatic Chris Hemsworth portraying the deranged warlord.
In a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, a young girl named Furiosa is forcefully taken from her idyllic home, the Green Place, a secluded haven abundant with food and water. She is captured by Dementus, a cruel yet charismatic warlord leader of a ruthless gang of bikers. The film explores Furiosa’s upbringing within the gang and charts her transformation into the resilient, formidable woman we encounter when initially introduced in Fury Road.

The film delivers on its storytelling excellence with its masterful visual effects, relentless action sequences, captivating world-building, and stellar performances that elevate the film. What we get is an impressive standalone cinematic experience. The movie exudes the same electrifying energy as Fury Road, seamlessly integrating practical and visual effects. Its stunning sound design, meticulously crafted set, and costume designs breathe life into the chaotic wasteland, adding depth and authenticity to the film.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga provides a rich and intricate backstory that explores the motivations behind Furiosa’s actions and why she is the way she is, brought to life by the incredibly talented Anya Taylor-Joy. Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of the cunning and sadistic Dementus is nothing short of stellar, showcasing one of his most compelling performances to date. You can clearly get a sense of pure enjoyment from Hemsworth’s performance as he embodies the bike warlord in all his glory.
Despite its disappointing box office sales, overall, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga marks a triumphant return to the immersive world of Mad Max and is an essential viewing experience for fans of the series. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was released on the 24th of May, 2024 and is available now to buy on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
A Quiet Place: Day One
Last on our list and the sixth film highlight is the most recent release is the apocalyptic horror spin-off and prequel film “A Quiet Place: Day One”. The third instalment in the film series, The film stars the talented Lupita Nyong’o, Stranger Things Joseph Quinn, Hereditary Alex Wolff and returning character Henri played by Djimon Hounsou reprising his role from A Quiet Place Part II.
The film follows Samira, a terminally ill cancer patient living at a hospice in New York with her cat, Frodo. One day, Samira goes on a trip to Manhattan when meteor-like objects fall from the sky and Samira finds herself alongside fellow survivors trying to escape to safety while avoiding the blinded alien creatures that will kill anything that makes a sound.

“Day One” is a thrilling and intense addition to the series, offering a captivating and heart-pounding experience from the opening scene to the final moments. The film expertly balances an exhilarating blend of action and suspense, ensuring you are constantly on the edge of your seat. Alongside the cast’s stellar performances that elevate the movie, the film leans into the mystery of the alien’s origin but still leaves some unanswered questions for future instalments to explore. This spin-off prequel addition delivers a meticulously crafted horror thriller that will leave a lasting impression.
I was really excited when I heard the film’s setting would be in the apocalypse’s early days. Since we got a glimpse of it in “A Quiet Place Part II,” I was hoping we would see more of it, and now, finally, we can. In this film, we witness the chaos and carnage in all its raw, intense glory, which adds a deeper sense of dread and despair. Similar to its predecessors, the film makes clever and effective use of sound to build intense moments and suspense during encounters.
Its striking cinematography and skilful direction deliver a tightly woven narrative that can stand on its own. Ultimately offering an intense, fast-paced, and heart-warming story of survival and the enduring connections between humans. The film was released in cinema on the 28th June, 2024 and is still airing for anyone to go see.
